Jim- thanks for commenting. Glad to hear your opinions on aerobic base training.

Here is an interesting link. I know this is counter-intuitive, but intevals improved VO2 max more than either long slow distance or anaerobic threshold training. Check out this link:

Aerobic base training is alive and essential; ...you can't build VO2(Max) capacity without it; ...high altitude aerobic base training even better; ...but it all needs to start many many months before target race peaking. Once VO2 capacity is there, I coach my athletes to deep pre-breath starting 90 seconds before their race start; ...I find it helps prevents lactic acidodis impact on lower half of the course.
